Welcome

Introducing SLIMS

In 2007 the University adopted a Client Service Model which articulates the direction the University wishes to take in providing academic administrative services for students and staff into the medium-term future.

In supporting this direction, the SLIMS Project will:

  • introduce a new student information management system (to replace the USRS and its ancillary systems); and

  • review, change and/or replace supporting business processes in order to get the most benefit from the new system.

The outcomes sought from introducing the new system are:

  • improved self-service for both students and staff;
  • improving business processes - leaving more time to concentrate on our core activities of teaching, learning and research;
  • a system that interacts effectively with other UTas systems;
  • improved management information to assist decision-making;
  • better capacity to respond to changing legislative requirements; and
  • improved communication between different areas of UTas; and
  • better job conditions.

Purchasing an "off the-shelf" product has been approved as the preferred avenue (over other options such as custom-build). It is the most cost-effective and will deliver the desired outcomes in the shortest time and with the least risk.

Project Control and Support

SLIMS is an independent Project within Student and Academic Services, governed by the SLIMS Project Board. It receives specialist support from the Student Centre as experts in centrally managed academic administrative services and IT Resources as specialists in associated hardware and database administration.

Current Status - as at July 2009

Phase 3 of the SLIMS Project is currently underway. The focus of this Phase of the Project is the selection and implementation of a new student information management system and supporting processes, with implementation and a go-live date likely in late 2011.

For more information relating to the Project's overall progress, please refer to the full Project Status Overview.

  • On 30 June 2009, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Rich, signed the contract with TechnologyOne for the provision of a new student management system, including software and services.
  1. Now that the contract has been signed, the SLIMS Project Team has commenced planning discussions with TechnologyOne to develop a detailed project implementation plan and determine how the system will be configured to best meet our needs. The Project Team is aiming to complete this planning over a period of approximately four (4) months.

  2. A SLIMS update has also been posted on the News@UTAS site.
